Review of the Wouxun KG-UVD1P

This is my review of the Wouxun KG-UVD1P 2M/400 and 2M/220 radio.

The Wouxun KG-UVD1P is not your average radio in the pile of electronics that are coming out of China these days. There are lots of different radios to choose from, including the Baofeng UV-5R series that are half the price of the Wouxun. Just remember that you get what you pay for.
If you want a radio that feels like a real radio and not a toy, then the Wouxun KG-UVD1P is still the best choice for you.
Have been watching the influx of cheap amateur radio equipment coming out of China the last few years, and from what I have seen they are getting great reviews. Not only from the ham community but from public service as well as preppers/ survivalists and FRS enthusiasts.
The Wouxun KG-UVD1P seems to be at the top of the pile, being a little bit more expensive than the others but with added features that make them easier for ham radio use as well as other services.

Dont forget that the Great prices on the Baofeng UV-5R at Amazon comes in a 2M/440 model and a 2M/220 Model also
.

Product Description
The Wouxun KG-UVD-1P Dual-Dand handheld commercial transceiver provides up to 5 Watts of RF power on VHF and 4 Watts on UHF. This Dual-Band radio has a frequency range of 136-174/400-480MHz RX/TX. FM: 76-108 MHz (RX). This is not a lighter duty amateur version. It features a long operating time with the included 1700 mAh high capacity Li-ion battery pack.

Features:

1. Amateur bands for multi-country use: The bands can be programmed via simple to use software and a special USB programming cable.
136-174 & 400-480 (RX & TX)
FM broadcast 76-108 (RX only)

2. SOS: This is another interesting feature. If you enable it in the menu, the radio will send out an SOS emergency signal.

3. Flashlight: This is one of the best features of the radio ! Pressing a side button illuminates a very bright white LED light at the top of the radio. This is very useful for finding gear at night!

4. Voice menu response: This feature is a little odd, but cool too. When enabled, the radio talks back to you in what I am assuming is a very cute Asian lady's voice.

5. Wide and Narrow band modulation supports 25 Khz and 12.5 Khz

6. Variable step frequency steps: 5Khz, 6.25Khz, 10Khz, 12.5Khz, 25Khz, 50Khz, 100Khz

Even though the Wouxun KG-UVD1P costs a little bit more, the quality of the Wouxun KG-UVD1P is ten times that of the Baofeng UV-5R series of radios. The programming cables are the same no matter which way you go, so getting one should not be a problem.

The Wouxun KG-UVD1P series of radio is just a well made radio, comparable to the big three brands that come out of Japan including Yeasu Icom and Kenwood. Even though technically it is not a ham radio but a commercial radio, it is still a solid radio that doesn't have that toy feel to it. You just have to keep in mind that this radio was not originally aimed at the amateur radio market, nor the FRS/GMRS market so it doesn't include a lot of the features you would find in a similar radio. Like the Baofeng UV-5R series it is a bit of a pain to program from the keypad, so the computer cable comes highly recommended . You also have to keep in mind that if you run Windows 8 on your computer, there are some known compatibility problems with the Chinese radios, whether it be the Wouxun or the Baofeng. These can be worked around by using the free software program called "CHIRP" or running the software in compatibility mode.

Bottom line is, you get what you pay for.
